OVERVIEW

Most of the car tunnels in Brussels, Belgium have the old style Auteldac 720 or 721 telephone installed for use in the event of a breakdown or emergency.

There are up to 500 telephones installed, and GAI-Tronics' distributor,
Telecom Systems BV, has secured an order to replace all of these with the
newer Titan telephone.

The telephones provide an autodial facility that connects users to a
centralised call centre for appropriate response to each situation.
Installation is programmed throughout 2002 and 2003 with orders of 100
telephones being placed at a time.

SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY

S C & E chose the 1 button S.M.A.R.T.* telephone version for their
application. The button is pre-programmed so users don't have to worry
about what number to dial in an emergency. Calls from all the telephones are routed to a specialised help centre.

Each telephone button has been programmed to a separate number. When
the telephone is used, the unique number is dialled, therefore the call centre immediately knows the location of the telephone.

S.M.A.R.T. allows the telephone numbers to be remotely programmed or
changed at any time without a site visit, reducing maintenance costs.
All the telephones are metal bodied with armoured handset cords. This
provides a weather and vandal resistant solution for the roadside.
