An Overview
GAI-Tronics, a Division of Hubbell Ltd is committed to providing quality products and services that meet customer needs, on time and to specification. The Company has a mature, integrated management system, which is approved to the ISO9001 quality, ISO14001 environmental and OHSAS18001 health and safety standards by LRQA. There is a well established continuous improvement program, which was recognized in 2004 by the ‘Perfect Engine’ award from TBM for lean manufacturing.
The Development Story
From its early beginnings in the 60's the Company was involved in the design and provision of communication and control equipment for arduous and hazardous environments in the mining and oil/gas industries where product quality and reliability are essential. Today we still providing such equipment and we are certified to the ATEX directive by BASEEFA, but the Company has used its fundamental expertise to expand into many other fields where the reliability and durability of product is essential.
A formal quality system was first established in 1985, and third party approval to ISO 9001 was achieved in 1991. The management system has been extensively developed over the years to incorporate the principles and methods of total quality and to establish a culture that fosters continuous improvement. The system was completely rewritten when the Company moved to a purpose built site in 2000, to improve the focus on key business processes and to emphasise the importance of customer satisfaction, as recommended by the ISO9001:2008 standard. The revised system is designed to provide an integrate response to all business needs and to facilitate future certification to Health and Safety management system standards.
When GAI-Tronics became a part of the Hubbell group extensive investment was made in Kaizen methods to develop the site as a centre of manufacturing excellence, which enabled us to produce other Hubbell products such as fuse switches, some of which are approved by UL and CSA. New equipment has also been secured to enhance manufacturing processes and to facilitate the introduction of lead free soldering to meet the requirements of the RoHS Directive.
In 2005 GAI-Tronics secured approval to the ISO14001:2004 environmental management system standard. The Company is a member of The Staffordshire Business and Environmental Network and there is an active environmental improvement program going on, which is supported by a ‘Green Team’ of volunteers who are keen to see that the business makes a significant contribution to the reduction of waste and the recycling of materials.
Since 2008 GAI-Tronics has approval to OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health & Safety Management System.
Environmental Issues
GAI-Tronics are committed to working with their suppliers towards a cleaner, greener environment. Our environmental management system is certified to ISO14001 by LRQA. A 'Green Team' of keen volunteers from the staff helps to keeps everyone informed and motivated about green issues.
GAI-Tronics has introduced lead free soldering and worked with its suppliers to eliminate the hazardous substances highlighted by the RoHS Directive from many products. The phones we make for the Highways Agency in the UK incorporate a solar cell, and by being 'self monitoring' many of our products avoid the need for energy consuming and expensive service visits to ensure that they remain operational. The Company is recycling most of the waste cardbord, soft plastic, paper and metal generated by business activities and is a member of the B2B WEEE compliance scheme, which takes care of product recycling on our behalf. Energy saving options are being sought and implemented where appropriate.
Batteries from GAI-Tronics products may be returned to our Repairs Department for recycling in accordance with the Batteries and Accumulators Directive.
Our products are used in some of the toughest environments on Earth, from the North Sea to the cold of Siberia and the hot, arid conditions of Australia, and designed to survive the extreme weather conditions we are increasingly seeing in these times. So the environment is very much our business and we intend to play our part in making it better for everyone.
